Home improvement winter tips

With winter weather well on its way, most home improvement and DIY enthusiasts are calling time on their outdoor projects and heading indoors for the foreseeable future. And it’s no wonder, as bad weather can really put a dampener on any kind of DIY project and has the potential to cause hazards.
So, if you’re a DIY lover who’s been forced inside, you’ll most likely be looking around for some projects which can occupy your hands until Spring arrives. And as luck would have it, there are always plenty of great ideas to see through even the most demanding of home improvement heroes!
Plumbing
Most of us have experienced that dreadfully annoying scenario of waking up one winter morning to discover that your water pipes have frozen solid and/or burst. So now more than ever you should be thinking about giving your plumbing a really good overhaul, to make sure that this doesn't happen. Pipes can freeze for a number of reasons, but the most common are because they aren't properly insulated, or are hidden away in cupboards where the warm indoor air can’t reach them. So look after your pipes by properly insulating your water tank, and by making sure your boiler’s frost protection thermostat is working properly.
Insulation
As mentioned above, insulation is great way to prevent frozen pipes. But it’s also a good idea to improve the overall insulation of your home, in order to keep you and your family nice and warm throughout the colder months. Not only will you feel more comfortable, but you may notice a reduction on your average winter heating bill as a result. As well as your loft insulation, you should also check that your cavity wall insulation is of a good quality. Cavity wall insulation is a job that’s usually carried out by specialists, but if you’ve got the know how you can always find good quality tools at Ridgeons Limited.
Draught prevention
Aligned with insulation is the important task of making sure your home is draft free. This may sound like a simple project, but if your home is old or hasn’t been improved in a while, you may find more draughts than you were first expecting. Plug up areas around doors and windows, and pay attention to areas such as your letterbox and boiler. Use proper sealants or rubber strips to make sure your home is as cosy as possible.
Improve Your Home Storage
Winter is one of those times when we all find out just how cluttered our homes are – because we’re forced to spend so much more time actually occupying them! If the weather’s too bad to go outside, a messy or unorganized home can quickly feel stifling. So help your family out by improving your home storage. Install fitted wardrobes or cupboards, build your kid a bunk bed with integrated lower study area, or even spend some time organizing your own tool storage area. Your family – and your tools! – will thank you.
