The most quirky home furniture

Sometimes conventional home décor just seems a bit too stuffy and plain, in need of something a little bit fun, fresh and different. Infuse your home with whimsicality by adding quirky elements here and there throughout the home. These unique touches can be as subdued or as lavish as your personal taste decrees.

Convention with a Twist

If you have some good, solid conventional pieces of furniture that are too good to throw or give away (or that you cannot afford to get rid of!) give them instant pizzazz by renovating them your own way.

For example, you can recover your beige two-seater sofa with denim, either by purchasing several meters of the fabric or by painstakingly unpicking ten to fifteen pairs of old jeans for a more authentic look and feel.

You will need to spend some time fitting all the pieces together smoothly before the new upholstery is ready to apply, but the finished item will have a fantastic retro edge.

Plain wooden chairs and tables can be lightly sanded before being given a bright and colourful coat (or two) of gloss paint.

Such simple steps can really make you décor pop, bringing life and vivacity into dark corners. However, do be sure that you are not desecrating a valuable antique before you start your efforts!

Steampunk Your Home

Trawl through car boot sales and auctions to find fantastic old items that you can buy very cheaply and re-fit for modern usage.

For example, an old leather attaché case can be reworked into a laptop case, enabling you to look mysterious and Romantic while commuting to and from work!

Bounce on a Beanbag

Everyone loves a beanbag! Even those who can no longer use beanbags due to age, arthritis or a fully developed sense of dignity still love the idea of collapsing carelessly onto a great squashy beanbag chair secure in the knowledge that it will not hurt.

Beanbags are perfect quirky accessories, sure to be dragged across the floor as soon as the slightest excuse raises its head. They can be tucked away when not in use, so as to free up some space too.

Mix ‘n Match

Team unusual items like those mentioned above with some conventional pieces to create a whimsical vignette in a corner of the room. The contrast between, for example, a sturdy leather chair and a beanbag will immediately become an interesting focal point in the room, and you can play psychologist on your guests by mentally guessing which piece of furniture they will prefer before they sit!

Environment Matters!

When aiming for the quirky look, do not neglect the walls and floors of each room. Create scenarios on the floor and walls that will draw the eye and work with features in the décor.

For instance, a large pot plant could be offset by a painted stickman or figure with watering can (a la the celebrated graffiti artist, Banksy) or a slightly more menacing chain saw!

Perhaps a painted raincloud could spill fat water droplets into the plant, or a cheeky monkey could peer through the foliage – the only limit is your imagination.
